Historic Apollo Theater Undergoes Once in a Generation Renovation

Tuesday, July 14, 2026

One of America’s most celebrated performance venues is entering a new chapter. Union contractors and carpenters with the New York City District Council of Carpenters are restoring and modernizing the historic Apollo Theater as part of the landmark’s first comprehensive renovation in more than 90 years.

Located at 253 West 125th Street, the Apollo Theater opened in 1914 and became the Apollo in 1934. Over the decades, it has launched the careers of legendary performers including Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Lauryn Hill, while remaining one of Harlem’s most iconic cultural institutions.

Union contractors and carpenters are installing interior systems, flooring, and specialty interior work throughout the renovation while preserving the theater’s historic character. Their craftsmanship is preparing this celebrated venue to serve artists, audiences, and the Harlem community for decades to come.
