New John Dewey Annex Adds 553 Seats in Gravesend

Thursday, September 17, 2026

A major new addition to Brooklyn’s public schools is opening its doors in Gravesend. The new three-story, 553-seat middle school at 106 Avenue X adds much-needed capacity for local students. Union contractors and carpenters with the New York City District Council of Carpenters built the $77.71 million John Dewey Annex for the New York City School Construction Authority, completing the project on a two-year schedule.

The 75,000-square-foot school serves students in grades six through eight and feeds into the adjacent John Dewey High School. Work included concrete and foundation construction, interior systems, finish woodwork, floor covering, furniture installation, and scaffolding. The fully electric, ADA-compliant building includes science labs, art and music classrooms, a gymatorium, library, full kitchen, and outdoor playground.

The new annex provides a modern learning environment while expanding school capacity in a growing Brooklyn community.
